Norway: Datatilsynet updates webpage on X's use of personal data for AI training
On November 19, 2024, the Norwegian data protection authority (Datatilsynet) updated its webpage where it provided information on X's use of personal data for training its artificial intelligence (AI) models.
According to Datatilsynet, X has resumed the processing of EU/EEA users' content on X to train their AI models, including its generative AI chatbot, Grok, after stopping this processing between May 7, 2024, and August 1, 2024. Furthermore, Datatilsynet provides instructions for users who wish to opt out of this processing.
What are the next steps?
Datatilsynet outlines that the situation surrounding X's use of public posts to train Grok is unclear. Furthermore, Datatilsynet states that the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has received several complaints against X and other companies that use personal data to train AI models and that it assumes the DPC will await the processing of these cases until an opinion from the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) is made available.
