Macau: GPDP issues summary of enforcement actions taken on unsolicited telemarketing
The Office for Personal Data Protection ('GPDP') published, on 26 January 2022, its decision, as issued on 26 January 2022, in which it fined a company MOP 560,000 (approx. €62,070) for violation of the Personal Data Protection Act (Act 8/2005) ('PDPA') and issued corrective measures for the temporary ban on processing of personal data, and the erasure or partial destruction of data by the company.
In addition, the GPDP outlined that it has opened 175 investigation cases since 2017 regarding unsolicited telemarketing, with around MOP 12.7 million (approx. €1.4 million) issued in fines to organisations and individuals that have violated the PDPA as a result. Furthermore, the GPDP noted that many companies in violation of the PDPA have taken advantage of cross border transfers of data.
