Italy: AGCM publishes highlights of G7 Competition Meeting

On October 4, 2024, the Italian Competition Authority (AGCM) published the highlights of the G7 Competition Meeting, held at the AGCM headquarters from October 3, 2024, to October 4, 2024. The AGCM highlighted that the event was attended by 35 antitrust and government delegates from Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, the UK, the US, and the European Commission.

According to the AGCM, the central theme for the G7 Competition Meeting was artificial intelligence (AI) and the competition issues associated with it. During the event, the attendees discussed current and future antitrust monitoring and enforcement activities, as well as policy and regulatory issues.

Lastly, the summit ended with a joint statement on digital competition, where the attendees outlined the following guiding principles that help ensure that societies reap the benefits of AI:

  • fair competition: Ensuring that digital and technology companies do not leverage their dominant positions to foreclose competition;
  • fair access and opportunity: Allowing for fair access to key inputs for the development and deployment of AI systems;
  • choice: Identifying and addressing any threats to consumers' and businesses' ability to make meaningful choices;
  • interoperability: Closely scrutinizing any claims that interoperability requires sacrificing privacy and security of AI models and systems;
  • innovation: Promoting conditions that support the development of new ideas, technologies, and business models within AI markets; and
  • transparency and accountability: Ensuring that businesses and consumers are adequately informed about risks and vulnerabilities with AI systems and holding AI developers and deployers accountable for areas of control.
