Canada: Government launches AI Safety Institute

On November 12, 2024, the Canadian Government announced the launch of the Canadian Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (CAISI). According to the Government, CAISI is a part of the Government's plan to support the safe and responsible development and deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure that governments understand and act on risks of advanced AI systems, including:

  • risks posed by synthetic content, such as impersonation and fraud; and
  • risks posed by the development or deployment of systems that may be dangerous or hinder human oversight.

What work will CAISI do?

CAISI is said to leverage Canada's AI research community and in-house expertise to conduct research in collaboration with industry and the International Network of AI safety institutes. CAISI will:

  • study how advanced AI systems work;
  • what the risks; and
  • provide tools to ensure that the Government is well-positioned to address AI safety risks as they arise.

CAISI will conduct research in two key ways:

  • through applied and investigator-led research; and
  • Government-directed projects.
