African Bodies: AU AI Working Group holds first session

The African Union ('AU') Working Group on Artificial Intelligence ('AI') ('the AI Working Group') held, from 3 to 4 December 2019, its first session in Cairo. In particular, the AI Working Group discussed its objectives including the crafting of an African strategy for AI and reaching a unified African position on AI, following Egypt's proposal for the same. Furthermore, the AI Working Group discussed approaches taken in Ethiopia, Cameroon, Uganda, Algeria and Egypt with regards to AI, with the aim to exchange expertise between the countries. In addition, the AI Working Group discussed a number of mechanisms that support AI in Africa, such as the AI observatory and the readiness indicator.
